S&S steel flywheel tapers can withstand a considerably higher torque specification than stock flywheels. Stock torque crank pin nut (Big Twin) Late 1981/Later, 180 to 210 ft. lb. Early 1981 & Earlier, 150 to 250 ft. lb. S&S torque crank pin nut, (Big Twin) Up to 500 ft. lb. If stock flywheels get over tightened, you can ruin the tapers in the flywheels. Connecting rod side play should be set between .005”/.030”. HELPFUL HINT Commonly needed torque specifications. All specifications are given in foot lbs. unless otherwise noted. The oil feed hole in the flywheels changed when Harley-Davidson® went to commonized tapers in Late 1981. Early crank pins used a larger 3⁄ 16” x 1⁄ 2” long key while later models used a smaller 1⁄ 8” x 1⁄ 2” long key.
